Types of Urinary Tract Infections

  • Acute pyelonephritis: a severe kidney infection that includes symptoms such as high fever, bloody/cloudy urine, lower back (flank) pain, nausea and vomiting
  • Acute cystitis: inflammation of the bladder caused by a bacterial infection, which typically results in frequent and painful urination
  • Urethritis: inflammation of the urethra associated with burning with urination, frequent urination, pain with sex, and/or abnormal vaginal discharge

What Causes Urinary Tract Infections?

The most common cause of a urinary tract infection is bacteria entering the urinary tract through the urethra and spreading to the bladder. Bacteria can quickly multiply in the bladder, and if left untreated, can ascend even further up the urinary tract via the ureters (tubes that connect the bladder to the kidneys) to the kidneys, causing a serious infection.

Women are more prone to urinary tract infections than men because females have shorter urethras. This allows the bacteria quicker, easier access to the female bladder.

How Are Urinary Tract Infections Diagnosed?

A urine sample will be collected when you exhibit symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI). A urine dipstick in the office is a quick, easy way to screen for a UTI. A urine sample can also be sent to a laboratory to be examined for bacteria and white blood cells under a microscope. Cultures of the sample are analyzed to identify the specific bacteria responsible for the infection, so appropriate treatment can be provided.

What is the Treatment for an Urinary Tract Infection?

Dr. Swing usually treats urinary tract infections with antibiotics for three to seven days. Symptoms typically improve within a few days of treatment. If a patient has a kidney infection, this will require a longer course of antibiotics, and on occasion, hospitalization for IV antibiotic treatment.

Pain medication may be prescribed, in addition to antibiotics, to numb the bladder and urethra.

How Can I Prevent Urinary Tract Infections?

Follow these lifestyle tips to prevent urinary tract infections in the future:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Empty your bladder as soon as you feel the urge to urinate and be sure that you have emptied your bladder completely
  • Wipe from front to back
  • Urinate after sex to flush out any bacteria
  • Avoid feminine products that may irritate the urinary system or genital area
  • Avoid douching
